Athletics at CCDS

Athletics is an important and integral part of a Country Day education. Each student-athlete has much to contribute and much to gain from playing sports here. The school fields 64 sports teams, and an average of 90 percent of our students participate in some form of organized athletics on the Middle School, junior varsity, or varsity levels.
Properly conceived, directed, and coached, interscholastic athletics provides experiences and lessons that cannot be duplicated in the classroom. Participation in athletics promotes a positive self-image; development of physical, mental, and social skills; understanding of team cooperation; and a sharing of personal experiences.

Participation
Charlotte Country Day School believes that the opportunity to join an athletic team should be afforded to all students rather than to the talented athlete alone. Each season, at least one sport for boys and one for girls does not have a roster cap. If a student does not make a team in his or her sport of choice, an opportunity is still afforded the student to join an interscholastic team. In selected sports where space and participation opportunities are limiting factors, roster caps are placed in order to limit these team rosters to realistic numbers.

Program Expectations
The three levels of competition—Middle school, junior varsity, and varsity-are part of the same program coordinated by the varsity head coach. Student-athletes at all levels earn the right to play through proper attendance, attitude, and work habits.

Middle School
The interscholastic athletic program strives to maximize the number of student-athletes involved while maintaining a quality program. It is designed to be a competitive program while meeting the developmental needs of its participants. For teams comprised of seventh graders only, coaches are instructed to make every effort to get each child in as many games as possible. For teams comprised of eighth graders or combined seventh and eighth graders, playing time is at the discretion of the coach with a focus on quality playing time for all in as many games as possible.

Junior Varsity
Team and individual skills are honed in preparing the student-athletes for the extremely competitive varsity schedule. Playing time is at the discretion of the coach with a focus on quality playing time for all in as many games as possible. Winning is not the focus, but rather, development of players.

Varsity
The commitment is to putting the best team on the field. Varsity selection is based on skill and maturity of the student-athlete. Each student-athlete's skill level is re-evaluated at the beginning of the season for team membership. Scheduling and playing time considerations are based on what best prepares the team for season-end tournament play.

Buccaneer Sports Tradition
The Bucs have a long-standing tradition of excellence in athletics. Country Day is a member of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA), which was established in 1973. Since then, the Bucs have won more than 98 state championships. In addition, the Bucs have won the highly coveted Wachovia Cup eight times since the award was established in 1982. The Wachovia Cup is the symbol of overall excellence in sports among the state's independent schools.

Country Day competes locally in the Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA), which includes Charlotte Christian School, Charlotte Latin School, and Providence Day School. Statewide the Bucs are a 3A school, the largest of the three divisions in the NCISAA.

Pledge
The Charlotte Country Day athletic department will not tolerate the use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products by students. The use of these products is detrimental to one's health and is in conflict with the Country Day athletic program. A team acknowledgment statement is signed in the pre-season by all members of the teams, committing the team members to conduct themselves in a responsible way and to take responsibility for the welfare of their teammates. Team captains sign the leadership pledge, abstaining from the use of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol.

Recruiting
Charlotte Country Day does not recruit athletes, nor does it provide athletic-based scholarships. Financial aid is provided based on a family's financial need. Athletes that come to the attention of the coaching staff are referred to the Admissions Office.

Strength and Conditioning

At Charlotte Country Day, we are proud of our commitment to health, fitness, and sports performance which is seamlessly integrated in the athletic experience. Our training philosophies are rooted in the study of kinesiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, strength training, and sports nutrition. Training concepts include multi-dimensional, multi-planer movements that incorporate strength, balance, and flexibility for the purpose of improved dynamic movement (i.e. athletics). This type of training prepares the body for actual performance movements (running, jumping, shuffling, changing directions, etc).

In-Season Training – For each junior varsity and varsity sports team, training sessions are scheduled and attended twice a week. Each team is exposed to a battery of performance test to determine athletes’ specific needs. The test results are used to design a comprehensive periodized exercise program that is relevant to their athletic performance and sport specific injury prevention.

Pre-season Conditioning Class – Student-athletes not participating in a team sport prior to an upcoming season have the opportunity to register for pre-season conditioning class for a physical education credit. Three times a week students gather in sports specific groups and train for their upcoming season. Similar to in-season training, custom programs are administered for each sport.

Facility – During the spring of 2006 our 2,600-square-foot strength and conditioning center was redesigned with additional state of the art equipment in order to support our training philosophies. Included in the facility are nine Sorinex power racks with new whisperlink rubber surface platforms that provide our teams with safe, designated work spaces to perform a variety of Olympic lifts and other dynamic movements. Also included in the upgrade are three sets of SPS plyometric (jumping) boxes. The facility also has several Hammer Strength plate loaded machines, a free weight area with 2.5 tons of dumbbells, and an open area for agility, plyometric, and core training.

For questions, please contact Darnell Clark M.P.E., C.S.C.S., Director of Strength and Conditioning.

Sports Medicine

Country Day has a commitment to athletic training that is rarely found at the secondary school level. We have four certified athletic trainers to cover 16 sports and more than 60 teams at the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity levels. Our athletic trainers operate and maintain training rooms on both campuses. The 2,100 square foot O’Leary Sports Medicine Center at the Cannon Campus is comparable to some of the nation's best college facilities.

When the Bucs compete, a certified athletic trainer is always on duty to evaluate injuries and provide immediate and follow up care. Country Day athletes have the luxury of completing individualized rehabilitation programs in-house under the supervision of our certified athletic trainers. Rehabilitation is closely coordinated with physicians and physical therapists. Before an athlete is returned to play, the strength and conditioning coach becomes involved in modifying any team-related conditioning programs. Athletic trainers also educate the athletic community about nutrition, healthy living, first aid, CPR, and the effects of harmful substances. The sports medicine program also has student athletic trainers assisting with the everyday operations of the athletic training room and on-field practice and game coverage.

Sports Medicine Curriculum
Charlotte Country Day offers many opportunities for students to advance their knowledge in the field of Sports Medicine. As freshmen, they may take Concepts of Physical Fitness as part of the PE curriculum. Students may also take Basic Athletic Training which includes American Red Cross certification in First Aid and CPR with Automated External Defibrillator (AED), as an elective at any grade level. The science department offers Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Medicine and plans an additional course, Biomechanics of Sports Performance, in the near future. Students wishing to gain practical experience in the field may participate in our Student Athletic Training Program. There are many internship opportunities for seniors including orthopedics, physical therapy, athletic training, and exercise physiology.

Charlotte Country Day School welcomes our visiting sports teams.
